Составить и записать по содержанию текста свои 5 вопросов (письменно) на английском языке, пересказать текст ( не менее 7 предложений) на английском языке. Why don’t we all speak the same language? There is a theory which says that at one time, at the beginning of history all people spoke the same language. They call it a parent language. Maybe there were two ore more parent languages then. At first they belonged to small groups of people. By and by these groups became bigger and went to live in new lands. In their new countries they first spoke their old language but with time their speech began to sound different. In the new places those people stopped using some of the old words and so they forgot them. The structure of their sentences slowly changed too. They also made new words to speak about new things they found in the new lands. After a long time the changes in words, pronunciation and grammar were so great that their language began to sound like a different one. That was how a new language was born. In just these ways, Spanish, French and Portuguese developed from Latin and English, Norwegian, Dutch and some other languages grew from an early form of the German language.

Questions

  1. What is the theory about the origins of language mentioned in the text?
  2. How did small groups of people contribute to the development of different languages?
  3. What factors led to changes in the speech of people who migrated to new lands?
  4. Can you name some languages that developed from Latin according to the text?

Summary

The text discusses the origins of language and the idea that at one time, all people spoke a single language, known as a parent language. This parent language may have been one or more types. Initially, small groups of people spoke this language, but as these groups expanded and moved to different regions, their speech began to evolve. Over time, as they settled in new areas, they gradually stopped using some old words and altered the structure of their sentences. This process included making new words to describe unfamiliar things they encountered in their new environments. Eventually, the changes became significant enough that the original language transformed into a new one. As examples, the text mentions how languages like Spanish, French, and Portuguese evolved from Latin, and how English, Norwegian, and Dutch originated from an early form of the German language.
