Letter to Alex (75-85 words)

Dear Alex,

I hope you’re doing well. I’ve been reading about local football leagues and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Last weekend I tried cycling up the hill near the lake, and I surprised myself with how far I could go. It’s tough, but exhilarating. I’m thinking of joining a weekend club for beginners. What sports have you been enjoying lately? Let me know soon – it would be great to meet and practice together.

Best wishes, Sam

Speaking: talk about sports (2-3 minutes)

Good afternoon. Today I’ll talk about sports. I like badminton, swimming, and cycling. I’m less keen on rugby and heavy weightlifting because they’re very rough and can be risky for joints. I prefer activities where technique, stamina and strategy matter as well as fun.

Badminton is my favourite sport. It’s fast, social, and demands quick decisions and precise footwork. I love the fast exchanges, the feel of a well-placed shot, and the teamwork when playing doubles. I’ve improved my footwork through drills, and last season I reached a personal best in my net shot. Swimming keeps me fit year-round; a routine of warm-up, drills, and laps clears my mind and builds endurance. I train in a squad twice a week, plus solo sessions, and I use heart-rate zones to guide effort.

Cycling is ideal for weekends; I can cover distance, see new places, and rest my shoulders after a busy week. On windy days the hills test my leg strength, but I enjoy the challenge. I ride with a local group for social motivation and safety in numbers. I also value cross-training because it reduces boredom and aids recovery.

In terms of what I go in for, I’m focused on three strands: badminton club twice a week, swimming three times weekly, and a cycling group on Saturdays. I set small goals, such as improving my serve, shaving time on a 5K, or increasing distance while keeping good form. I’d like to try volleyball and handball to test agility and teamwork. Do you have a favourite sport and why do you like it?
