Reading 11 Read the text and answer the questions. Save the Polar Bears! Rising temperatures due to global warming are threatening the entire Arctic ecosystem. Warmer temperatures mean less pack ice - ice that polar bears depend on for hunting. As their natural habitat gets warmer and decreases in size, the end result is fewer polar bears. For the polar bear, an irreplaceable symbol ofthe Arctic, climate change could lead to extinction. Temperatures in the Arctic are rising almost twice as fast as in the rest of the world. Since 1978, Arctic sea ice has shrunk by more than 8% per decade. Greenland's huge ice sheet holds enough water to raise the sea level by approximately 23 feet (7 metres). If it melted, it would be disastrous for polar bears. In fact, it would be disastrous for the whole world. Polar bears are the world's largest land-based predators, but despite being on top ofthe food chain, they face threats from climate change that they cannot overcome - unless we do something about it. Sign our petition now! a What will happen to polar bears if the pack ice melts? b How quickly are temperatures rising in the Arctic? c How much water is there in Greenland's ice sheet? d Are there any other predators bigger than polar bears? e What does the writer of the text want readers to do?
