"Come on, get in quickly!" - your friend shouts from the elevator, which was supposed to take you to the top floor of the store. "Umm... I will take the stairs and meet you upstairs!" - you respond. As soon as the doors close, you feel relieved. Climbing to the eighth floor takes a long time, but you don't want to take the elevator. Many of us have fears - whether it's heights, spiders, or even answering questions in class. Fear is a basic human emotion necessary for survival. When faced with danger, the brain reacts by activating the nervous system. This leads to the "fight or flight" response. Amazingly, all of this happens in just a few seconds! However, fear is not always helpful. For people with phobias, such as acrophobia (fear of heights) or claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), fear greatly limits their lives. For example, a teenager who was bitten by a dog in childhood may fear seeing dogs. This reduces the ability to socialize with friends and other issues may arise. Between 5 and 10% of the population have phobias, but they can be fought. It is important to start confronting your fears by making a list from less scary to more scary and gradually facing them.
