    Basic Atomic Structure

The idea that everything is made of atoms was pioneered by John Dalton in a book he published in 1808. It is him A_________________ the father of atomic theory.

For almost 100 years after this, most scientists thought of atoms as solid structures, until in 1897 J.J. Thomson B_______________ contain even smaller particles called electrons.

This discovery C________________ , but later, in 1906, Rutherford and Gieger announced that when they fired alpha particles at a thin sheet of gold foil, most of the alpha particles passed straight through it, but a few bounced back. This experiment showed that most of an atom is empty space, but there is a very small, dense nucleus in the centre. Later Rutherford discovered positively charged protons.

It D__________________ that another particle in the nucleus, the electrically neutral neutron, was discovered by James Chadwick. Finally, in the 1930s, the modern model of the atom was in place: a dense nucleus containing protons and neutrons, with electrons orbiting near the outside of the atom.

In reality, electrons are much further away from the nucleus than you would expect. If the nucleus was represented by a golf ball, the E_______________ three miles wide!

Each chemical element has a set number of protons in its nucleus. For example, carbon is F__________________ per atom. In an atom, the number of electrons is the same as the number of protons. Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes. Whatever the number of electrons, remember that most of the weight of an atom is in its nucleus, protons and neutrons.

    Решение

A-6: It is him  who is sometimes called the father of atomic theory. - Именно его иногда называют отцом атомной теории.

B-1: until in 1897 J.J. Thomson discovered that atoms did contain even smaller particles called electrons. - пока в 1897 году Дж.Дж. Томсон не обнаружил, что атомы действительно содержат еще более мелкие частицы, называемые электронами.

C-7: This discovery itself was a shock, but later, in 1906, Rutherford and Gieger announced... - Это открытие само по себе стало шоком, но позже, в 1906 году, Резерфорд и Гейгер объявили ...

D-3: It was not until 1932 that another particle in the nucleus, the electrically neutral neutron, was discovered by James Chadwick. - Только в 1932 году Джеймс Чедвик открыл другую частицу в ядре, электрически нейтральный нейтрон.

E-2: If the nucleus was represented by a golf ball, the whole atom would be three miles wide! - Если бы ядро было представлено мячом для гольфа, весь атом был бы шириной в три мили!

F-4: For example, carbon is the only element with 6 protons per atom. - Например, углерод - единственный элемент с 6 протонами на атом.
